Reclaiming Your Body After Motherhood

Rediscover your pleasure, your sensuality, and your sense of self beyond the role of mother

You've Given So Much: It's Time to Come Home to Yourself

Motherhood changes everything. Your body has grown and birthed new life. Your time is no longer your own. Your identity has shifted in profound ways. And somewhere along the journey, you may have lost touch with the woman you were before, the one who felt alive in her body, connected to her pleasure, confident in her sensuality.

Perhaps you're exhausted. Perhaps you feel "touched out" after a day of small hands constantly reaching for you. Perhaps the idea of intimacy feels like one more thing on an endless to-do list. Perhaps you look in the mirror and don't recognise the woman looking back.

This is the reality many mothers face, yet so few spaces exist where you can speak openly about it.

You're Not Alone in This

Research and clinical experience consistently show common patterns that many mothers face:

  • Feeling disconnected from your body after pregnancy and birth
  • Loss of libido and sexual desire that lingers far beyond the early months
  • Feeling "touched out": your body craving space after constant physical demands
  • Difficulty reconnecting with your partner when exhaustion takes over
  • Physical changes that affect how you experience touch and pleasure
  • The challenge of seeing yourself as a sensual woman, not just a mother
  • Navigating intimacy when you're running on empty

If you're experiencing any of these, please know: this isn't failure. This is the reality of a profound life transition that our culture doesn't adequately prepare us for or support us through.

Understanding What's Really Happening

The Research Behind What You're Feeling

Your experiences aren't "all in your head". They're rooted in real physiological, psychological, and social changes. Understanding what's happening can help you feel less alone and more empowered to address it.

Physical and Hormonal Changes

Research shows that 58% of women experience painful sex three months after birth, with 44% reporting loss of sexual desire. These aren't small numbers. Nearly half of all new mothers face these challenges.

Your body has been through an extraordinary journey. Hormonal shifts during breastfeeding naturally reduce libido. Physical recovery from birth takes time, often much longer than the six-week check-up suggests. Vaginal dryness, scar tissue, and changes in sensation are common and workable.

The brain itself changes during motherhood. Studies show that amygdala activation to sexual stimuli decreases in postpartum women as the brain prioritises infant-related stimuli. Your body is literally rewiring itself to focus on your baby's survival.

The "Touched Out" Phenomenon

This isn't a personal failing. It's a real physiological response to sensory overload. When you're breastfeeding, holding, carrying, comforting, and physically caring for a child all day, your nervous system can become overwhelmed by touch.

Between the constant physical demands, lack of personal space, and overstimulation from noise and touch, many mothers describe feeling like they want to crawl out of their own skin by the end of the day. For many mothers, more physical contact is the last thing they want. For others the longing for adult touch is sharper than ever. Both are ordinary.

This is your nervous system saying: "I need space to regulate." It's a boundary, not a rejection.

Identity and Role Changes

You're not just recovering from birth. You're integrating a fundamental identity shift. Research shows that many women describe feeling like they've "lost themselves" in motherhood, particularly when cultural expectations demand complete self-sacrifice.

The transition from "woman" to "mother" can feel like an erasure of your previous identity. Your desires, your sexuality, your sensuality: these parts of you don't disappear, but they often get buried under the weight of caregiving responsibilities and societal expectations.

The Relationship Shift

Studies indicate that emotional intimacy and sexual satisfaction commonly decrease after children arrive. One partner often pursues connection whilst the other withdraws, creating a painful cycle where both feel lonely and misunderstood.

The division of labour becomes a flashpoint. Research consistently shows that women take on significantly more unpaid childcare and housework than their partners, even when both work full-time. This imbalance breeds resentment, which is intimacy's enemy.

When you're managing the mental load of the household, touched out from a day with children, and carrying resentment about unequal labour, your partner's desire for physical intimacy can feel like yet another demand on your already depleted resources.

A Different Approach to Reconnection

Not About "Getting Back" to How Things Were

Many approaches to postpartum sexuality focus on "getting your body back" or "reigniting the spark" as quickly as possible. This creates pressure and often sets you up for disappointment.

My work takes a different approach. We're not trying to return to who you were before. That's impossible, and actually, it was never the goal to begin with. This isn't just about motherhood. This is about a fundamental shift from living goal-oriented to living present.

Most of us spend our lives chasing some future version of ourselves, trying to get back to how things were, or pushing towards how we think they should be. We're rarely present to what we actually need in this moment. Motherhood often brings this pattern into sharp relief because the demands are so immediate and constant, but the pattern itself is older and deeper.

Instead of asking "How do I get back to who I was?" or "How do I become who I should be?", we're asking "What do I need right now? What does my body need in this moment? What's actually true for me today?"

This is about discovering who you are now, moment by moment, rather than trying to fit yourself into any predetermined shape, past or future.

Working With Your Body, Not Against It

Rather than fighting your body's natural responses, we work with them. This means:

Understanding Your Nervous System

Learning to recognise when you're in fight, flight, freeze, or fawn responses. Understanding what your body needs to feel safe and regulated. Creating practices that help you move from overwhelm into a state where pleasure and connection become possible again.

Reclaiming Bodily Autonomy

Motherhood can make your body feel like it belongs to everyone else. We work on re-establishing that your body is yours. You have the right to say no. You have the right to want space. You have the right to desire pleasure.

Rediscovering Sensation

For many mothers, reconnecting with their bodies begins not with partnered intimacy but with learning to be present in their own skin again. This might mean gentle touch practices, breathwork, or simply spending time with yourself without the constant demands of others.

Addressing Physical Changes

If you're experiencing pain, dryness, or changes in how touch feels, these are workable conditions. We explore what your body needs now. This might include learning different types of touch, understanding arousal and lubrication changes, or working with pelvic floor awareness.

The Work We Do Together

For Individual Mothers

Reconnecting With Your Own Body

Before you can reconnect with a partner, you often need to reconnect with yourself. We work on:

  • Learning to inhabit your body again after it's been focused outward for so long
  • Exploring what pleasure means to you now (it may look different than before)
  • Understanding your current relationship with touch and sensation
  • Building practices that help you feel alive in your body
  • Addressing any physical discomfort or changes
  • Rediscovering your sensuality separate from your role as mother

Navigating the Identity Shift

You contain multitudes: you're a mother AND a sexual being, a caregiver AND someone with desires of your own. We explore:

  • How to honour both parts of yourself without guilt
  • Setting boundaries that protect your energy and autonomy
  • Managing the "touched out" feeling constructively
  • Finding small moments to reconnect with yourself amidst the demands
  • Building a relationship with your postpartum body based on compassion, not criticism

For Couples

When One or Both Partners Want to Reconnect

If you're working to rebuild intimacy with your partner after children, we address:

Communication Around Needs and Capacity

Learning to talk openly about desire (or lack thereof) without shame or defensiveness. Understanding that responsive desire (common in mothers) looks different from spontaneous desire. Finding language to express what you need, whether that's more help, more space, or a different type of connection.

The Division of Labour

Resentment kills desire. We often need to address the practical realities of who's doing what in your household. When one partner feels overwhelmed and unsupported, physical intimacy becomes nearly impossible. This isn't romantic, but it's essential.

Redefining Intimacy

Intimacy after children rarely looks like it did before. We work on:

  • Finding new ways to connect that fit your current reality
  • Understanding that small moments of affection matter
  • Building emotional intimacy throughout the day, not just in the bedroom
  • Creating realistic expectations about frequency and type of sexual connection
  • Scheduling time together (yes, it's less spontaneous, but it matters)

Navigating Different Desire Levels

When one partner wants more physical intimacy and the other is touched out and exhausted, both feel hurt and misunderstood. We work on:

  • Understanding each other's experiences without judgment
  • Finding middle ground that honours both people's needs
  • Addressing the pursuing/withdrawing pattern before it calcifies
  • Building connection in ways that don't feel like pressure

Common Questions

"How long does it take to feel like myself again?"

There's no standard timeline, and frankly, you're not "getting back" to who you were. You're becoming someone new who integrates both motherhood and your other identities. Some women feel reconnected within months, for others it takes years. Both are normal. The work we do together helps this process, but it's a journey, not a quick fix.

"Is it normal to not want sex at all?"

Yes. Research shows that loss of desire affects between one-third to one-half of women in the first six months postpartum, and for many women this continues well beyond the first year. Between hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, physical recovery, and the demands of caring for a baby, your body and mind have other priorities. This doesn't mean your sexuality is gone. It means it's dormant whilst your system focuses on survival.

"I feel guilty that I don't want my partner to touch me."

This feeling is incredibly common and completely understandable. But feeling "touched out" isn't a personal failing or a rejection of your partner. It's your nervous system's response to sensory overload. Your body needs space to regulate. This is a boundary, and boundaries are healthy. The work is learning to communicate this to your partner in a way they can understand, and finding other ways to maintain connection.

"Will I ever feel sexual again?"

Yes. Your sexuality hasn't disappeared. It's temporarily buried under exhaustion, hormonal changes, and the demands of early motherhood. As your child grows, as you reclaim more autonomy over your body, and as you do the work of reconnecting with yourself, your sexuality can re-emerge. It may look different than before, but different doesn't mean less than.

"My body has changed so much. How can I feel attractive?"

The relationship with your postpartum body is often one of grief and adjustment. Your body has done something extraordinary, but that doesn't mean you automatically feel comfortable or confident in it. We work on building a new relationship with your body based on what it can feel and experience, rather than how it looks. This is a process, and it's okay to grieve the body you had whilst learning to appreciate the one you have now.

"I'm breastfeeding. Is that why I have no libido?"

Breastfeeding significantly affects libido through hormonal changes. Specifically, it can cause vaginal dryness and decrease sexual desire. This is your body's natural response. For some women, these effects persist throughout breastfeeding. For others, they lessen over time. Either way, knowing this is physiological rather than psychological can help remove some of the guilt and worry.

What Makes This Work Different

An Understanding Rooted in Deep Listening

I haven't experienced motherhood myself, so I won't claim to know exactly how it feels. What I bring instead is professional expertise in embodiment, sexuality, and trauma-informed bodywork, combined with a deep commitment to truly listening to your experience. I've supported women through many life transitions, and I approach the unique challenges of motherhood with respect, evidence-based knowledge, and without judgment.

My role isn't to tell you what motherhood should feel like. It's to create a safe space where you can explore what it actually feels like for you, and to offer practices and support as you find your way back to yourself.

Trauma-Informed and Body-Centred

This work recognises that:

  • Your body is wise and deserves respect
  • Healing happens at your body's pace, not according to external timelines
  • You have complete autonomy over what happens in sessions
  • We work with your nervous system, not against it
  • Touch is always optional and negotiated with full consent

Beyond Just Sex

Whilst rekindling your intimate life may be part of your goals, this work is fundamentally about reclaiming yourself. It's about finding your way back to pleasure, embodiment, and aliveness after a period of intense outward focus. Sometimes that leads to renewed partnered intimacy; sometimes it leads to a deeper relationship with yourself. Both are valuable.

You Deserve This

Permission to Prioritise Yourself

Months or years of putting everyone else first take a toll. You've fed, comforted, and cared for others from your body and your energy. You've adapted to an entirely new identity and way of being in the world.

Now it's time to turn some of that care inward.

This isn't selfish. This isn't indulgent. This is essential.

When you reconnect with your body, when you reclaim your pleasure, when you remember that you're a whole person beyond your role as mother, this doesn't just benefit you. It models for your children what it looks like to honour yourself. It strengthens your relationship with your partner. It allows you to show up more fully in all areas of your life.

You deserve to feel alive in your body again. You deserve to experience pleasure. You deserve to reclaim the parts of yourself that got buried under the weight of motherhood.

The woman you were hasn't disappeared. She's been waiting patiently for you to come home.

Hear From Women Who've Walked This Path

"I am a 53-year-old mother who had just walked away from a 15-year relationship. I decided now is my time for self-love, joys, passions and knowing my values."

I am a 53-year-old mother who had just walked away from a 15-year relationship and I wanted to take stock of my life and reevaluate how I was living and what I had exempted in my life. I have recently become aware of the impact that sexism has had on my life and how it has prescribed what is expected of me. I have been compliant giving my power away. I decided now is my time for self-love, joys, passions and knowing my values.

Taking part in this course has truly been phenomenal and I cannot express the positive impact participating has made. Simple things like just gently stroking my hands and spending time with myself in a loving way (which I have never done before) has been profound. Giving myself tenderness through whole-body touching has made me realise how important self-love is and how healing self-touch can be.

I'm still the kind compassionate Jules I was before but I am not anxious and burnt out. I have learnt to check in with myself and check what I need before I respond to what other people want. I have noticed that I have become a lot calmer and less reactive, taking my time to respond to events in my life and clearly asking for what I need.

Being in Love with You Programme
"My chosen project was to listen to my womb and the story of my womb. Melanie brings such warmth and sensitivity to the conversations and holds space for exploration."

My intention for Melanie's course was to connect to my body more. I was also looking forward to being in a space where I could really speak of my body, how it feels, sensations that I experience, and explore more.

The course started with really slowing down and we did exercises with touching our hands which continued through the whole course. It slowed really everything down. Very somatic experience. It gave me permission to be, permission to stay in that given moment. It was a very meditative state. The exercise led me to be very conscious of sensation in my body. It also gave me permission to stay with the most uncomfortable feelings in my body that do come up.

One exercise I loved exploring was exploring yoni. I've learned so much more about it. I learned new words, I learned more about the clitoris. I was amazed at the size of clitoris that we have. It was very unknown territory to me and I just love sharing all the findings in the group.

Part of the course is a chosen project and the project that I've chosen, after speaking to Melanie in our one-to-one meeting, was to listen to my womb and the story of my womb. Melanie brings such warmth and sensitivity to the conversations and shares and she holds space for exploration. I find that her loving energy invites you to share honestly and to explore more.
