Nobody ever announced that this stops. It arrived in what was not said, in who quietly vanished from the adverts, in the way a doctor moved briskly past the question.
This is a panel of women over fifty saying the unsaid part out loud, at normal volume.
Silver Tent TV, Sex and the Older Woman
In this opening episode of the Silver Tent TV series Sex and the Older Woman, Melanie Knight launches a bold and much-needed conversation about sexuality, desire and intimacy in later life. Joined by her panel of women, Melanie creates a warm, honest space to explore why conversations about sex and ageing are still so often silenced, and why that needs to change.
The discussion opens up the territory that the series will go on to explore: the impact of menopause on sexuality, the myths around desire and ageing, and the ways in which women over 50 are reclaiming their sexual selves. Melanie brings her characteristic blend of openness, humour and grounded wisdom, making this a genuinely accessible and empowering watch.
This first episode sets the tone for the series, real women having real conversations, with no shame and no holding back. It is an invitation to any woman who has ever felt that her sexual self was supposed to quietly disappear after a certain age.
Highlights from the Conversation
Sunday shared a moment of raw vulnerability, telling the group about a time she asked a younger man directly whether he found her attractive. "Because my assumption would be that he wouldn’t," she said. It’s a quiet admission that captures something so many women over 50 carry: the belief that desirability has an expiry date, and the courage it takes to question that belief out loud.
Gwen told a wonderful story about what happened after a conversation with Melanie about pleasure. On the bus home, she noticed men kept giving her looks, something that hadn’t happened in a long time. Melanie’s reflection was beautiful: "When we come from pleasure and connected to our own sexuality, we have a very different being that lights up rooms." Something shifts when a woman is connected to her own aliveness, and other people notice.
Diane offered a powerful challenge to the idea that older women become invisible: "Are you invisible? Or is it that you’re saying you’re invisible, therefore that’s what you believe, therefore that’s what you project?" It’s a question worth sitting with, how much of what we experience as invisibility is actually a story we’ve absorbed from a culture that doesn’t value older women?
Sunday spoke with real joy about the kinds of orgasm she’s discovered later in life: "I tune into so many different orgasms now… those celestial orgasms that are all encompassing, that aren’t genital based and just recharging me at a cellular level." A beautiful reminder that sexual experience doesn’t narrow with age, it can expand in ways we never imagined.
Melanie herself was disarmingly honest about living with a prolapse and the fear of being judged by a partner. It’s the kind of vulnerability that changes the room, normalising real bodies in later life and showing that intimacy doesn’t require a "perfect" body, just an honest one.
The group also explored the lost role of the "wise woman", how, historically, older women were the ones who taught younger men about pleasure, tenderness and what it means to truly be with a woman. That knowledge has largely disappeared, and the panel felt its loss deeply. There’s a richness and a generosity in what older women know about bodies, about connection, about patience, and the world is poorer for not listening.

Key Topics Covered
- Why we need to talk about sex and ageing
- Breaking the taboo around older women and sexuality
- The impact of menopause on desire, intimacy and self-image
- Reclaiming sexual identity in midlife and beyond
None of this is theoretical. It is women talking about their own lives, which is still rarer than it ought to be.
